Progression review

Feel bit deflated today after yesterdays progression review. The outcome which will be reviewed again in a couple of weeks is that I should paint much more loosely with ambiguity and not from photo journalism.  Hit the wall would be a good way of where i'm at right now. Cherie

Progression review

This is my dining room come work studio :-) and here are 3 oil paintings I'm putting in for review on wed, I have produced other experimental works utilising photography in place of paintings to save on time,  exploring the most effective means of impact for an image in my subject matter, which is 'morality'. I have also included a work in progress  image which shows how I work from a grid system. Cherie

Journey

April 2012

A group of six BA (hons) fine art graduates held an exhibition titled 'Journey' at Eastbridge Hospital in Canterbury. This is their first collaboration, each bring a very different interpretation of the meaning of Journey; consisting of installation, painting, ceramics and sculpture.

Pilgrim Bottle
Ceramic 2012
Pualine Davis

'In medieval times it was a common and popular pastime to go on a pilgrimage in search of spiritual enhancement and buy a token of your visit.'

'Canterbury Catherdral became a site of pilgrimage after the murder of Thomas Beckett in 1170 and continues to be so. In today's busy business and recreation. My work offers pilgrims to this exhibition the chance to purchase a 21st century pilgrim badge.'

Deva
Acrylic and plaster on canvas 82cm x 120cm 2012

'Deva is an ancient Sanskrit word meaning 'shining one'. The sun is a guide, the light, the energy and a higly religious symbol. The sun is everything.'

Rebecca Wood

'Inside the snow globe on my father's desk, there was a penguin wearing a red-and-white-striped scarf. When I was little my father would pull me onto his lap and reach for the snow globe. He would turn it over, letting all the snow collect on the top, then quickly invert it. The two of us watched the snow globe fall gently around the penguin. The penguin was alone in there, I thought, I worried for him, When I told my father this, he said, "Don't worry, Susie; he has a nice life. He's trapped in a perfect world." Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones.'

A Pilgrim's Road
Mixed media installation 2012
Nova Marshall

'Pilgrims carry money to pay tolls, make offerings at shrines, to purchase tokens and relics during their journey and at their destination. Tokens included bells, badges bearing the red cross, shells, the Virgin Mary and coins.'

Fluct
Oil on canvas 2012
Trevor Laming

'A journey undertaken as a requirement of belief whether by the refugee or pilgrim is a journey requiring faith. To find hospitality and friends is the hope, particularly when the journey is based on fear of failure. This painting could be experienced with these thoughts or as a simple landscape.'

It was great to see such a variety of work by a group of fellow UCA graduates; providing an excellent insight into current thought and practices, sympathetic to the site.
